I would need to find some photos of the regt wearing the 2 tower badges in Brodrick caps to nail the date and prove the slow adoption of the 1901 sealed pattern 3 tower badge. But it cannot be ruled out that the wide wreath badge was an early 1906 version which agrees with the Museum's dating and the nature of the construction.

This does not support a particular battalion attribution to either 1st or 2nd and as the photo shows at the start of the thread it was still in use in WW1: either a maker's variation or as old stock being used up.

And here is the picture of the 2nd Dorsets wearing the pre 1901 badge on a Brodrick. If the medal ribbon ID is correct then the photo must be 1905 at the earliest. The title clinches the battalion ID. As a Sgt he may well have retained the old pattern badge as an 'old sweat'.

The photographer was Bulford Camp. In 1906 the 2nd Bn returned to India but the Sgt in the photo may have been detached so I can't rule that out. The cloth s/titles suggest pre 1907 which ties up with other information.

By 1909 the regiment were in peaked caps as this photo shows:
