Earliest Royal Marines button
Hello all
Finding out for friend. What's the earliest recorded Royal Marines button please? And does anyone have a picture of one please? Thanks all Chris |

The earliest royal marine infantry buttons didn't have the royal marines name on them that started in 1801. the link mentioned doesnt show those earliest ones which were silver for officers and pewter for other ranks.

They were a different design to the one shown as officer, 1767?
(I thought the one shown was of silver, a closer look suggests a yellow metal?) |

These are the marine infantry buttons pre 1801. I would suggest getting don troiani excellent book as well insignia of independence he has a good write up on them on page 113

Thank you for this, I've passed it on to my friend and he's greatful to all who have answered my post. This button, does it date as far back as formation, 1664, or is it not known? Thank you again Chris |

There wernt any numbered or titled buttons worn by any of the british army until 1768. before that you had plain pewter buttons for the other ranks and the officers wore fancy gilt and silvered buttons following fashion. i think more work could be done in that early era using paintings ect. so these would be between 1768-1801

I’ve only ever traced one earlier, silver faced with incised anchor, these appear in two portraits that both date to 1755-1765 period. See picture, top left for an example that was found in New York

Artynut i think it will be one of these to the royal marine artillery said to be from uncertain date between 1804-1820
