Your welcome BC, looking at your buttons they dont look like the 9th Lancers buttons i have, yours look flat and no crown, heres an example of a white metal button, i also have brass KC and QVC ones.
Could yours be Indian? poss Hodsons horse do you think ( Cox's book fig 2315).

Hi BC
I dont know sorry to say, i dont have any books on cavalry buttons.
Perhaps some of our button collecting members can be of help, i just find it strange that they have no crown,i might be wrong.

Hi folks,

Apologies for the delay in responding, been searching through my books.

The buttons look to be very similar to those shown in Gwen Squires book (Plate 74 - Nos. 9), in which she describes them as : "9th Lancers Military Hunt".
(Which is pressumably why there is no crown. I had wondered if they were blazer buttons before finding that reference to military hunt.). However, the Lances do look to have more detail in her picture than on the real buttons!

With regards to the 9th Hodsons Horse, I have shown below what I believe is their button. But I am seriously out of my depth with Indian buttons so may have it wrong.

Cheers

Ian

I had assumed it was a Fox Hunt run by the 9th Lancers.
There is a whole page (30 buttons) devoted to buttons of Military Hunts. With quite a few cavalry (i.e. 1st/2nd Life Guards, Queens Bays, Royal Scots Greys, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 15th & 20th Hussars, 5th, 9th, 12th & 21st Lancers) as you would expect for Fox Hunts. Some of the others are Royal Artilllery, Royal Munster Fusliers & Royal Dublin Fusliers etc.).

Some of the other Hunt Buttons in the surrounding sections detail:
Hunt - Foxhounds, Hunt - Harriers, Beagles etc., Hunt - Staghounds, Buckhounds, Otter Hounds and Others.

So we probably wouldn't be far off with assuming it was a Fox Hunt, using Hounds and the people on Horses.

Cheers

Ian
