O level Latin lessons paid off
I bought this from a dealer. I was happy to pay quite a bit because of the Victorian construction with 3 lugs and a large brasing hole on the back. Also the time spent with Mr Spencer my old Latin master clearly paid off as the dealer was describing it as 10th Royals so I reckon I got a good deal because of it.

Here you go.
They have been repro'ed but with solid backs and generally 2 lugs. The fake feathers are not right and are also used on some yeomanry and other fake cavalry badges. This type was in use from c.1898-1903. |

A picture shows it better:
Gaunt soldiered fake: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cap-Badge-...QAAOSw2XFUcYsI A genuine one but with a missing lug: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/British-Ar...MAAOSw-jhUJ--c The fake 'flat' feathered one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/British-Ar...wAAOSwAYtWIk2G It is this one that can come with 2 lugs. This 10th Hussars badge is the same as the 12th Lancers' fakes but with a 10th scroll. At £10 the seller probably realises they are not period badge I have no connection with any of the sellers. |

I would expect to see the same type of construction but determining PoW collars between regts when the design was same/near identical is well nigh impossible.
I believe that the collar design changed at the same time in 1903 but stand to be corrected if it was otherwise. No doubt the multitude of PofW feather badges worn by other regts at the time, compelled the 12th Lancers to change the design to something more distinctive. My assumption is when everyone was in khaki the distinctive cavalry cut and colours of the previous uniforms were no longer there to distinguish the Lancers from other regiments. Collars
I have 4 two almost a pair then two odds one odd has a very small circle type sweat hole I believe many regiments had these collars so quiet hard to distinguish whos who as no Lancers scroll. First two are almost the pair the last two sets of pictures are odds and sods

Nice sets. Personally I do wonder whether they are all makers variations and the same badges left the factories destined for the 3rd DG, 12L, 10th Hussars and all those Yeo regts. Alan |
