Unknown Uniformed Group in Johannesburg
I bought this photo on spec from Ebay as it had the look of a wartime group, possibly with a Civil Defence connection. It was only when I got it that I discovered the name of a Johannesburg photographer on the back.
There is a mixture of military and possibly police uniforms, nurses and women in a khaki uniform with side hats and a Boy Scout. Close ups of the cap badges are not of great help. Can anyone shed light on the uniforms or service please? Jon |

The last photo is, I think, South African Engineers.

The guy wearing the circular cap badge could be "Civil Protection Service".

Thanks for the suggestions.
Please can anyone post a picture of the badge of the "Civil Protection Service" and let me know something about it. The name suggests a Civil Defence-type organisation which in the context of the photo would make sense. Jon |

See attached photo of their badges. I understand that they were the SA version of our Civil Defence.

Hi Jon,
Nice interesting picture. Would it be possible to see enlargements of all the other people in order to verify the units? As is I believe the following are represented: Back row left to right: CPS (Civil Protection Service) - Civilian Guard Civic Guard - Later pattern badge without crown Ditto Boy Scout - assisting in war work SAEC (South African Engineer Corps) - Officer ?? - Possibly SAEC as well but badge not very clear SAWAS member - (South African Womans Auxiliary Service) - Voluntary organisation WAAS (Woman Auxuliary Army Service) ?? - Need clearer picture SAWAS member SJAB nurse ?? - Need clearer picture Front row left to right SAMNS nurse (South African Military Nursing Service) or civilian Nurse SAWAS kitchen staff SAWAS kitchen staff SAWAS member Civil official SAWAS member SAWAS member Civil nurse SJAB nurse Regards Steven |

Great picture! The sapper might be Mines Engineering Brigade. The two unknowns might be NRV or NVB. The equivalent of the Home Guard. They wore leather 03 equipment rather than 37 webbing. Looking at age and ribbons on some likely to be one of the Dad's Army outfits. NRV = National Reserve Volunteers
NVB = National Volunteer Brigade Both outfits wore the general service springbok head in circlet badge |
