Default East Surrey WW1 2nd Vol BN War Raised unit badge

Just bought this badge, never seen one before for the war raised Surrey Volunteers. There were 3 bns of East and West Surrey volunteers formed accordingly to K & K. Assumed it was a fake but it was cheap so took a punt. Anybody help with an opinion. Thanks, John

If, as it appears, it’s the one that sold recently on eBay for £4.20 from seller bonaprods then yes it’s a cast copy repro.

The London Cyclists with the STARR PUTNEY marked slider they sold was also a fake.

It appears to be a copy of a 2nd Volunteer Battalion cap badge of the Volunteer Force period that was disbanded in 1908 and not any WW1 or War Raised Volunteer Bn (VTC).

The East and West Surrey Regiments both had four Volunteer Battalions each although the 1st Surrey Rifles never took up the title as 1st VB East Surrey Regt.

The 2nd VB were HQ’d in Wimbledon, unfortunately the badge you posted was been heavily reproduced in OR’s and Officers’ forms. The flat top Victorian crown is the 1st version and then for some strange reason also found with a South Africa honour scroll, I say strange as the King’s crown version would have been issued before that honour was awarded and it can also be found with the SA scroll also.

3rd VB were based in Kingston and the 4th at Clapham Junction.

As Simon has pointed out, these badges have nothing to do WW1, it was a different Volunteer Force raised for that conflict. Volunteer Battalion badges are late Victorian through to Edwardian and generally associated with the Boer War.
