Pandemic Civilian Service Medal ..petition your support needed..
Thought this would be a good idea !!
Think all Civilian Voluntary Service during this Pandemic should be recognised. If anyone could add support that would be great !! Link below !! Cheers all !! "Create a"Pandemic Voluntary Service Medal"to recognise Civilian Volunteers. Civilian NHS Volunteers, St Johns Ambulance and the Red Cross should be recognised for their unselfish and admirable service towards others after this difficult time of Global and National Crises. Individuals who have volunteered reflect our multicultural Society unwavering in support our NHS,assisting those most vulnerable in society. This army of volunteers should not be overlooked once this disease has been eradicated from our shores During these unprecedented times, there are no awards or recognition in place for our volunteers. This medal would be an award which could reflect our Nation's pride in our army of Volunteers, and the service they offered to others in support of our NHS" https://petition.parliament.uk/petit...vWIehUVA1w0hDz Last edited by arrestingu; 13-04-20 at 02:46 PM. |

it would be nice to see the NHS being recognised for its outstanding efforts. iI believe The George Cross would be appropriate, normally reserved for individuals but there is a precedent as Malta was awarded the George Cross for the siege of Malta. Requirements for the award are; The George Cross (GC) - introduced in 1940, is granted only for acts of gallantry of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger The committee considers the following when reviewing the award Cases are assessed against a number of factors including: whether the individual has gone above and beyond the call of duty the level of risk involved whether a deliberate decision was made to act persistence in acting whether the safety or lives of others were protected by the individual’s actions All of which i believe have been achieved.

I wonder if i would be eligible, i am working for public health and safety. I have to deal with the public, the virus is going on. Its ridiculous to think that I would get a medal, where would it stop?

Just an observation, the OP does say 'voluntary civilian services'. The NHS is not a voluntary civilian organisation, doctors and nurses etc get paid.

It is a nice idea , and I have signed , but I think it is a very difficult area to cover.
Who would qualify ? NHS staff ? There are a lot of "agency" staff working in hospitals who are not employed by the NHS . Then there are all the cleaners, porters and laundry staff who are employed (quite often on minimum wages) by the large contract companies. Rail , Underground and Bus staff who are essential to getting people into work. Postal workers and shop staff whose work is vital to the country. The list is endless ! As someone who has been on the "front line" in hospitals (NHS/Private/Overseas) for 30 years I appreciate the work and effort of all staff but I wouldn't want or expect a medal for simply doing my job . The government and media have focussed on the NHS staff but without so many others doing their jobs the current situation would be a lot worse.

Hi
Yes NHS can sign . There is already a "Key Workers " medal petition up for signing. Though this does NOT cover the volunteer sector. Just NHS, Police , Army etc The suggestion of an award is for those who put others above themselves and are volunteers within one or more of the organisations .Not their daily job . Best wishes Steve |
