Just been looking at Dead Spartan Militaria top of page 2. Another just sold as Coldstream Guards, with the apostrophe also.

Toby ive just checked with a mate, he was a WO2. His cap star is like Alex's, white metal main part and garter strap gilding metal. He has 4 cap stars, all the same.

Thank you Andy, that’s really useful information. I don’t have a CG WO’s cap star and all the descriptions in references like K&K, John Gaylor, Edwards, etc. refer only to white metal with no mention of gilt, so hence my misunderstanding.

It begs the question of how the CG WO and RHG Officers garter star can be told apart. If not by careful measurement of the dimensions (?) then presumably only by the quality of manufacture.

Hi All
Thanks for all the observations. CG or RHG doesn't matter to me either way. Would have been nice if it was an RHG but still happy with the badge!
Cheers,
Alex

Default CG/RHG

Alex,

Your CG officers badge is a quality badge , thanks for sharing . I believe a few people have learnt a thing or two .

*Note As well as Dead spartan , Lew Shotton has sold an RHG officers badge as a CG badge

I’ve just learned that the exact same badge appeared on the rear of the Coldstream Guards officers bearskin cap when bearskins were adopted by the regiment, for the first time, in 1835. Apparently the badge was around 3x3”.

Interestingly there is a specific reason why the badge was shared by the RHG and the CG. Both regiments were comprised of soldiers who had previously been a part of Cromwell’s New Model Army and were a part of the force that accompanied Lord Monck in his march South in 1660 to pledge his renewed loyalty to the King following the restoration of the monarchy. In recognition of this the King presented Monck with the Order of the Garter in May of that year, and it’s emblem was in turn made an emblem of the two regiments of Guards that he brought with him, one Horse and one Foot. So hence the sharing of the Garter Star.

Did RHG wear that design on their belts? If so could we have a RHG centre married up to a CG outer in a mistaken (but forgivable) attempt at a match.

Not my area of course but just a thought.
