Coldstream Guards Tunic
I need the help of the forum please.
I recently purchased a red Coldstream Guards tunic. Not my normal thing but what attracted me to it was the manufacturer's label dated 1937 and the Guardsman's service number which was inked in the lining 2658673. From the service number is anyone able to identythe original wearer please? Thank you for looking, Keith

WWII Talk's Coldstream Guards nominal roll doesn't have "2658673" listed unfortunately - just the men "either side":
2658672 Guardsman ROSEMURGEY EDWARD E 3rd Bn. Coldstream Guards 2658674 Serjeant ROBERTS BERTRAM LISTER B L 4th Bn. Coldstream Guards |

Hello, no, just that the nominal roll is an ongoing project and the compiler has not got the details of 2658673 yet:

Numbers did not belong to a regiment or corps or department..
They belonged to the soldier throughout his career, issued on enlistment as one next in the sequence of his regimental allocated block [say Coldstream in this case] but then stayed with the soldier regardless of transfer, regardless of going to the reserve, regardless of joining the TF or TA, or the Army Catering Corps [or vice versa] |

Notwithstanding, Army Order 388 was very clear and the point here is simply that particular number could have only been originally issued to a Coldstream guardsman on enlistment.

Perhaps I should not have bothered to post what I took to be helpful clarification, based on my writing the definitive article in the MHS Bulletin. |

Keith,
Have had a cursory search of the General Service Medal Roll, Clasp Palestine for the Coldstream Guards for your Man with no trace unfortunately. However it may well be worth you downloading the Roll from the National Archives and having a more thorough search at your leisure. (Download is free and is emailed to you in PDF Form as per the link below) https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C11476900 Best regards Simon. |
