Couldn't resist adding this one, I know it's not in London but it deserves to be seen all the same ! It sits proudly on Hill 60.

In an earlier post I said I did not know of a stone memorial to the HAC, but today I learn there is one in the churchyard of St. Botolph without Bishopsgate. A tall cross dedicated in 1916 which on the four sides of its base are mentioned the men of the HAC who fell 1914-16, Lord Kitchener, John Cornwall (Won a VC at the age of 16), and on the final side - the Men of Bishopsgate
Perhaps not exactly a HAC memorial as it is shared with others, but they do get a mention.

Finsbury Rifles
Managed to track down the war memorial to the Finsbury Rifles - junction of Rosebery Avenue and Gloucester Way, Islington:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/397027 I'll do my best to get some photos of it tomorrow, but you can get a glimpse of it from Google 'street view'. The best Google vantage point appears to be from Gloucester Way/Elms Road, just at the junction of Rosebery Avenue. Regards, Peter. Last edited by Peter J; 14-09-11 at 07:43 AM. |

I believe the Queen Victoria's Rifles war memorial is at their HQ building in the West End (Davies Street W1). Not entirely certain on this, but will check it out and confirm later.

PJ, if memory serves me right there was/is a commemorative plaque over or near the door of the QVR's HQ in Davies Street. Long time ago and I could be thinking of somewhere else.
Cheers, John

John,
As ever, that very impressive memory of yours is spot on. Just been looking at the address on Google 'street view' and there is a carved, stone plaque at either end of the building bearing the words: Queen Victoria's Rifles KRRC Well done, John.

6th City of London
Linking in with this thread started by Jumbo; as well as the memorial to The Royal Fusiliers at High Holborn, they are remembered (as pointed out by JohnG) at St. Sepulchre-without-Newgate, where there is also a wood panel memorial to the 6th City of London Battalion.
Another one for the photo list ! (Hope to have the Finsbury Rifles memorial photos posted this evening - fingers crossed). Regards, Peter. |

I presume that there is a war memorial proper, within the premises. Peter. Last edited by Peter J; 14-09-11 at 12:07 PM. |

Finsbury Rifles Memorial
Finally managed to get over to Rosebery Avenue, and take some snaps of the Finsbury Rifles Memorial:
Finsbury Rifles (1).jpg It is situated at the corner of Gloucester Way, and Rosebery Avenue, in a small garden space known as Spa Green: Finsbury Rifles (9).jpg Sadly, the memorial itself appears to be somewhat unloved, and could really do with a bit of a general tidy-up. I might give the local authority (Islington) a shout to see what their stance is on this sort of thing. Finsbury Rifles (16).jpgFinsbury Rifles (13).jpg In addition to the Finsbury Rifles, there are also dedications on this memorial to the Royal Flying Corps... Finsbury Rifles (20).jpgFinsbury Rifles (19).jpg ...a WW2 dedication to the Honourable Artillery Company (apologies for the poor-quality images)... Finsbury Rifles (21).jpgFinsbury Rifles (22).jpg ...and the Naval attack on Zeebrugge in 1917... Finsbury Rifles (17).jpgFinsbury Rifles (18).jpg Finally, the inscription on the front of the memorial... Finsbury Rifles (8).jpg ...which reads: 'BOROUGH OF FINSBURY IN THE NAME OF GOD THE MOST HIGH AND TO ENSHRINE IN PURPETUAL LOVE AND REVERENCE THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS BOROUGH WHO IN DEATH MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR KING THEIR COUNTRY AND THEIR KINDRED IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR OF 1914-1918 THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY GRATEFUL FELLOW CITIZENS IN WHOSE HEARTS THE RECORD OF THEIR COMRADES' HARDSHIPS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE CAUSE OF INTERNATIONAL HUMANITY, FREEDOM AND JUSTICE WILL REMAIN FOR EVER INEFFACEABLE AND IMPERISHABLE --------------- THROUGH TRIAL TO TRIUMPH' Regards, Peter.

I've been doing some research and have come up with the locations of a few more not mentioned here or in other threads. Most are plaques inside churches or TA centres so I would expect an arrangement will be needed to view them. 23rd London - St.Mary's Church, Church Road, Battersea SW11 3NA 20th London - Hollyhedge House TA Centre, Blackheath 10th London - St. John's Church, Lower Clapton Road, Hackney E5. Confusion here as the inscrption reads City of London, the 10th were County of London. 17th London - St.Mary & Holy Trinity Church, Bow Roaw, Bow, E3. It appears this is on a crucifix which used to be in the regiments' old church St.Stephens in Tredegar Road which was bombed in WW2. 8th London - St. Botolph's without Aldersgate, Aldersgate St, EC1 16th London - Westminster TA Centre, Fulham High St, SW6 All info take from searches on http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show...n/1/viewPage/3 No luck on the 7th or 18th London's though. |

Bishopsgate Churchyard
Thanks, gents.
Not strictly within the remit of this thread but possibly worthy of inclusion, is a small memorial in Bishopsgate Churchyard, just behind the church of St. Botolph-Without: Bishopsgate Churchyard (1).jpgMemorials 036.jpgMemorials 035.jpg This has WWI dedications to the HAC (Battle of the Somme), Lord Kitchener (HMS Hampshire sunk by a mine), John Travers Cornwell VC (Battle of Jutland), and the 'Brave Dead of Bishopsgate'. Bishopsgate Churchyard (4).jpgBishopsgate Churchyard (3).jpgBishopsgate Churchyard (2).jpgBishopsgate Churchyard (5).jpg Interestingly, all of the above refer to events which occurred in 1916, with the 'Brave Dead of Bishopsgate' dedication specifying 1914 to 1916. I'm sure I've seen something on the 18th memorial recently. I'll have a trawl through my 'search history' . Great bit of detective work, there. Nice one. Peter. |
