Here's a nice pic of an officer's stirling silver cap/collar badge.
Enjoy! Mick

I seem to have got something wrong as, from memory I thought 28 Bn was the City of Perth Regiment, but I see from the badge they are/were The Swan Regiment. So please tell me who are the City of Perth Regiment.
Incidently, I nearly joined 28 Bn in 1956, but after hanging around for a couple of hours waiting to be seen I toddled off, and joined 10 Ligth Horse in January 1957 at Victoria Park, Perth (Before the regiment moved to Karrakatta), and never regretted it. Another couple of lovely badges. Yours is a ripper Mick. You just keep showing those enamelled badges.

Lovely badge, sarmajor, which set me pondering upon 28th (Swan Regiment) badges. I noticed that your badge appeared to have a black patch behind the swan to colour and emphasis it. I know that the post 53 badges have a tab designed to hold a black patch but I don't think I have ever seeng such a feature on 1930/42 period badges. However I do seem to recall having seen a number of those badges that have had a red felt backing so as to create a border around the badge. I understand the notion of the "black" swan and all but are those red backed badges correct? Donny B. |

Here are a couple of examples. These two are "as found" from very different unrelated sources. The red felt on each is a bit grotty and one is particularly moth eaten. Is the red backing just to tart them up or is it correct? Comments? Donny B. Last edited by Donny B.; 25-11-13 at 09:04 AM. Reason: word added |

Hi Donny.
I have a 30-42 9th Light Horse hat badge with the red backing as well. Purchased direct from the family so I assume it was official. Ed |

Nice badge, Coast Watcher! Thanks for posting it
After your earlier post about the red backing I did a bit of a search but my limited resources gave no information regarding a red backing for 9th Light Horse badges.....just as I have not found anything about the red backing on the 28th badges. Sarmajor has a black backing on the 28th badge he posted when he started this thread.......I do hope he is not offended that we have used his thread to introduce this discussion........and I do understand that the swan represented on the badge is a black swan. I guess I had kind of hoped that one of our experts would have commented on the correctness of the red vs black backing on these particular badges. The only thing that I can say is that the red backings on the badges that I pictured had all the appearances of having been on the badges a long time and until I know better I shall be leaving them that way.
