Dundee and District Commando did have a skull and cross bones as a flash. I don't find any reference to why they picked that as their flash. In 1998 they applied to use a badge that was the same as the Buffalo Border Guard cap badge, but having the letters DG for Dundee Glencoe. Regards Andrew

I am now feeling totally gutted, saw one of these about 2 years ago at an obscure second hand shop in the Midlands of KZN with a load of other common badges, had absolutely no idea what it was and left it alone.... oh well we live and learn.

"SLAY AND SPARE NOT". That motto would hardly bode well for enemy prisoners.

I just found this on Ladysmith's history website.
1859 – July: Thomas Munro Carbutt was a steward at the Ladysmith races, the same year elected lieutenant of the Natal frontier Guard, disbanded in 1876.

So the Natal Frontier Guard was disbanded in 1876.

I also found reference in "George Eliot and the British Empire" By Nancy Henry of them preparing to do battle with the Basutos in July 1865.

Not much out there on them, but keep searching. Have a great day. Regards Andrew
