Another one off the list William. A brilliant find.
I always doubted it existed. Makes me wonder which other a/a badgesHugh King mentions did exist . |

Just arrived home, Marc. Family wedding - only here for the weekend, but happy to find the REME badge amongst the piled-up post.
Hope you are well? W |

Hmmm! I have always believed that the 2nd patt REME badge with KC was never made in AA. Buttons were, but not cap badges. If made 1947/8 to 1952/3 then this is a unique and rare badge, or maybe it was made 2016/18! Maybe Chris Marsh (hagwalther) can throw some light on the subject. I have a bi-metal badge with a similar horses mane with the MM 'LUDLOW', could this be a spurious badge made using an old die? Also, its difficult to see from the photo, but how is the horse fixed to the lightning? As always, willing to be proved wrong, but I think this is a duffer, but I would like it in my 'rouges gallery' collection.

Busy weekend. The badge looks good to me with a slider that reminds me of a Marples and Beasley item. William, can you measure with micrometer and check with the examples in my book - possibly slider 8.2? The solder looks quite light. Very generally, Gaunt and S&W used a dark solder while Firmin used a lighter coloured type. Not sure what Marples and Beasley used at the mo in the early stages of A/A manufacturing but this may be another indicator to maker. Regards, Chris |

Hi William,
Nice one! Another one too look out for. There are certainly a few more a/a badges with a Kings Crown (Tudor) out their than we imagined. K.C Glider Pilot next week? - now that would be special! Regards Colin Last edited by ukbrits; 01-05-18 at 08:00 PM. Reason: Grammer |

Now that would be 'different' but doubtful. However, I did have one badge maker who confirmed they would make me 100 when I asked them a few years ago... Good job we know what a modern A/A badge looks like eh! Regards, Chris |

Hi Chris,
Hope you are well? I reckon we are now getting close to around 20'ish known K.C a/a badges including some doubtful ones amongst that number. The list of changes C4717 in November 1951 may well have been more accurate than first thought for the introduction of a/a badges into Service. Certainly if I was a Director of Gaunt, Firmin, Grove, R.A Hughes, Buttons Ltd, Smith & Wright, Timings etc I would make sure that I can produce items ready for Service when existing stocks of metal badges were exhausted. Be one step ahead of the opposition if you like! These early K.C badges appear to have varied slider styles. Williams badge I.M.O may be an early Firmin or Buttons Ltd badge from the piccy he has posted? Please, don't purchase the 100 Glider Pilot badges as the Airborne fraternity on the Forum will pay top dollar for them! lol Best Regards Colin |

All well here in EnZed! Change C4717 was only an issue of intent not a 'proper' List Of Changes (LoC) change i.e. authorisation. It is interesting but really just a list of units that were once proposed for an A/A cap badge nothing more. Remember that some of the very first A/A cap badges came from the previous metal dies which can throw a spanner in the fake/genuine works but other attributes can always sort such issues out. In effect then, the badge makers were 'ready' but thin aluminium was not the way to go due to structural issues hence the thicker sheet used later. No plans to get 100 KC A/A Glider Pilot badges made but no doubt if someone does I'm sure the money trail will lead right back to them... Regards, Chris |
