Cleaning Guards buff belt
What's the best thing to use to clean/whiten up a leather buff belt? Got hold of a belt to finish off my Coldstream tunic and it will need a bit of a clean up.
Now I have one and half Coldstream belts/buckles (It's like the M1's all over again, helmet with no liner? buy a not so good M1 with liner, take liner out put in better M1. Not so good M1 have no liner, no liners about? buy rubbish M1 take out liner etc... militaria problems) Alli |

Alli,
I use something called Bama Renovator which is for sports shoes and I am sure I got it at a Timpsons shop. It seems to work very well. Peter

Thanks Peter I'll keep an eye out for that, have been recommended a couple of products and given full instruction's. Hopefully I'll have the belt up to Guards standard in no time.

Thanks Eddie.
Was scrabbling around in my brain this morning trying to remember what I've heard people say they used to use and it's just come to me, Blanco. Would have bugged me if I couldn't remember. |

Went out of use just after Tim enlisted.

We had a blanco room in our accommodation block when I was in training in the eighties, there was not much that went on in there other than the occasional sorting of personal issues between individuals.
I think any product you use should be dried properly and if you can get one with lanolin as an ingredient Paul |

"(Pipe Clay) Went out of use just after Tim enlisted."
Marc Yes joined just too late for Pipe Clay but Centurion was still a tank and not a rank! This is my military career in Blanco (and boot polish)! In the CCF (1960s) we used blocks of Pickerings khaki green No3. At the RAC Training Regiment all webbing was scrubbed to off white with Vim during basic training. With the 9/12L it was polished with dark brown boot polish. Later with the RTR it was black boot polish. On transfer to the Int Corps it was back to Blanco in Buff No7. I acquired a second hand set of 58 pattern equipment in the mid 70s so no more Blanco! Belts green polypropylene were worn with No2 Dress. Then in the mid 80s I got a Sam Browne and it was back to brown boot polish! Tim Blanco came in many different colours, the most common being either the original No. 7 (British No. 61 Buff), a "khaki" colour which in practice was a tan shade, or one of two shades of green, either No. 9 or British No. 3 Khaki Green. Other colours included black (used by Royal Armoured Corps and rifle regiments per regimental custom), white (for ceremonial duties or military policemen on traffic control duty) or blue (by air force units), the latter being a shade known as "RAF Blue" for use on the RAF blue-grey web equipment.

You do know its a bit unusual that you can track your career via Blanco and boot polish?
Interesting of course but unusual nontheless! |

Following Eddies link to E bay, the description says the whitener is a spray, the stuff I use has a sponge applicator as in the picture, and is also very economical
