Four Australian Army Metal Distinguishing Badges
Hi,
Picked up a bashed up cigarette tin at the local auction house cheap with fours badges (pictured) in it, a couple are missing their backplates but they look original to me, what are others thoughts? I can post individual pictures is needed. When were these loop backed metal badges phased out? Cheers!

Loop backed badges are still made for and used by the British forces.

The skill-at-arms competitions for which some of these badges were awarded in Australia were abolished in 1940 and the wearing of any skill-at-arms and trade badges was stopped in 1942, economy in metal being one of the reasons.
However, they were often worn unofficially during WW2 and could be purchased from military outfitters. You can find some units forbidding their wear at the same time as the unit next door is advising what badges are available from the Q store and for what trade they could be worn. They were authorised for Cadets post-WW2 but no stocks were available and eventually the wearing of any of this sort of stuff other than the QI for instructors and the crossed rifles for marksmen was forbidden from 1952.
