Indeed, certainly not "South African" or, for that matter, a "pith helmet plate" a most interesting smooth reverse, patina (clearly, cannot be a "battlefield pickup" it would certainly not look like that, although, the seller does not actually make any such claim.) and a most unusual cross and orb, oh dear.

Battlefield "pickups" would not normally be complete, any lugs, in particular, tend to be missing and the metal itself will appear rather matt, with obvious corrosion and certainly not shiny in any way whatsoever.
