South African? - Silver hallmarked badge
Hi further to a post placed yesterday on some Suth African badges I have accumulated and finally getting to grips with I have found this "originally black" but noticed the possibility of hallmarks which after cleaning there is!
Has anyone any idea on this? Could it be anything other than a Military badge? The Hallmarks are English with the Lion - ? - Anchor & can,t remember the other block? Appreciate your help this helps me think I have acquired good badges but thats by accident! and only the odd few here and there! cheers billy Last edited by billy; 02-10-14 at 05:56 PM. |

I think the hallmarks are for Birmingham 1886.

Thanks for the input! would this be a common badge? as its Silver probably not that common (makes the rest appear to be good! though) also would this then have been involved in the Boer War? the Cape I presume was for Britain? I may appear stupid asking this but have read nothing on these campaigns and I do not think I own many badges from this period thanks and look forward to any info Forum members can shed light on this badge cheers "thick as a brick" billy

Very nice indeed, certainly not as easy to find these days either, they could be found with ease in South Africa and bought for very little, they played a very important roll in the Anglo Boer War, the Cape Colony was part of the empire, a certain Mr CJ Rhodes was , not only their prime minister, but, also the architect of the railway throughout the whole Colony and part of his Cape to Cairo dream.

I think the date letter has been stamped on upside down and is actually a “W” for Birmingham 1896. Regards, Zob. |

The hallmarks are indeed fifth cycle Birmingham for 1896-97, the mark within this particular cycle for 1886-87 appears similar at a glance, but, the outer shape of it's background is very different and it is not found on this badge anyway.

Hello Brian,
They do tend to be the same marks because of the considerable number actually made, don't forget everything changed in 1910, you then had the SAR. Regards Frank |
