Hi ANGLE IRON,
During the Victorian era and into the beginning of the 20th Century prisons were split into two categories Prison Department and Convict Department. The Convict Department dealt with those prisoners that had been sentenced as opposed to the Prison Department that dealt with those that were unsentenced. Prison Warders has they were known until a change in the 1920's to the title Prison Officers working in the Convict Department received higher pay than those in the Prison Depatment. Your button would have come off the tunic and would have been worn circa 1837-1902. Hwyl Bantam Last edited by Bantam; 06-01-12 at 11:30 AM. Reason: photo added |
