11th battalion border regiment
Found this badge in a lot op badges recently acquired.
Is it an original one? I can see a stamp on the silver wing. it is unfortunately broken on the scroll and missing the pin for fastening it |

In my opinion it is a dud. The pin fastening arrangement is of a modern style used on civilian jewelry and the metal visible at the break does not appear to be silver at all, unless that is some glue. The hallmarks look to be fake and not actually stamped on.

Aside from the above from CB, another giveaway is the angle of the tail; the tuft is hidden completely, it should be on show with the tail itself more horizontal.
The entire badge looks clumsy............if you know what I mean. Regards. Brian |

It’s a cast copy of an original.
The casting of the scar where the loop was present centreline behind the griffon on the original is visible. The other fixing would’ve been a tongue where the scrolls meet. |

Luke.
If it was, as you are quite right in stating, cast from an original, the tail is still wrong and having had another look, the tuft appears to be non-existent.............possibly cast from a wrong 'un? Regards Brian |

Brian,
It’s cast from a Gerrard original, note the poorly defined hallmarks on the wing. The fakes have poor detail on the griffins body - often appears rubbed smooth - and sometimes deformed lettering. Note the griffins tummy has no feather detail yet is covered in surface bobbles. Also note the mouth too, clearly defined on originals between beak and tongue yet the cast copy has not retained this sharp definition due to the manufacture process. The tail tip will have broken off and is a casualty like the scroll. Thankfully it wasn’t a real one so no loss. Regards, Luke |
