Phil the Ballot badge as in these photos (which are not good ), is there 2 different types 1 silver and 1 brass ? The silver were for females and the other for males . What i want to know is this correct and has any one got both types.

Here is a better photo from AWM website.

Also an article about "Voluntary Ballot Enlistment Scheme, 1918" may have some info.

Thanks for the link never thought to look there . In the book Australians Awarded he mentions that there were 2 different badges a silver type and brass. Type 1 and type 2 Silver for women? Brass for men . So that is why I thought to ask if any one has both or the Brass one in there collection and could post a photo.

Quotes from link I posted.

"Research has revealed that six designs were submitted, with the successful design being the one submitted by jewellers Angus and Coote. Handwritten on the final design of the successful submission is “Approved by Minister for Recruiting. 23. 8. 18. G D M”.

"The approved badge was ovoid in shape, 35 mm high and 28 mm wide, including the protuberances on each side. It was made of silvered copper, with a pin fastening at the back, and a number struck into the reverse of each badge. Apparently, 10,000 badges were produced in the initial (and probably only) striking, but this cannot be confirmed since no contract letting has been located in the Commonwealth Gazette for 1918, and the manufacturer no longer has the records for production of badges from that era."

No mention of a "brass" badge or that they were ever issued to women.

Yes I read the piece , but Clive mentions in his book about 2 types so I wonder where he got his info from and he shows a brass one next to the silver one.

Found a couple more pics , no details about the "brass" one but looks like it was sold on eBay Australia.

Still not sure about the 'female' badge , as these were basically "white feather" items why would they be issued to women ?
