I have Sam's medals, and would love to own the correct badges for a Sergeant in the NZETC. TradeMe has drawn only blanks in the few months I have been looking, and I am uncertain how the cap badges relate to a Sergeant - were they for officers? Any information or advice (or badges for sale!!!) would be much appreciated.

Hi Stuart, all information points to the large tunnellers badge was made in England and issued there.
As your relly was the first casulty, it is very possible he was only issued the smaller NZ Engineers badge, as such a small badge will not be out of place for display until you can find a tunnellers badge.

Thanks, Brent. I have an Engineer's badge, so as you suggest I'll make do with that until I can find a Tunneller's badge. Do you have any suggestions as to possible sources (I don't know any UK badge dealers)

Stuart, they turn up every now and then on trademe, the easy way to spot them without asking for its measurements, is to note the positioning of the ā€œGā€ in Gloria, as it sits more to the centre of the crown on the tunnellers badge, and to the left side of the crown on the smaller NZE badge.

Thanks for that - yes the photos on this site have been really helpful, I'm sure I can spot one, I just need to be patient!

Default Tunnellers or Engineers?

The badge I have measures 24 mm diameter & 39.5 mm high. Is this a genuine Tunnellers or is it the more recent NZ Engineers? I suspect the latter based on the above posts.

Default NZETC Badge

I was successful in purchasing a Tunnellers badge on Trademe (NZ). It is distinctively larger (4.5 cm) and has the much bigger lettering. It has a slider fitted on the reverse, not the two lugs like the Engineers badges I have. There is no maker's name. Given the comments made by atillathenunns, I fear it may be a replica, it looks a lot like the one he illustrates. Oh, well...
