Smile Buffs Pagri

I have never seen a Buffs pagri like this, the only one I have seen, the Dragon stands on a torse and not ground. This is probably a rare item.

Lovely badge here. The brooch fitting does not seem to fit comfortably on the badge though as it is visible through the fretwork. Is the fixing original or was there a slider on the badge? There is a vast amount of repro dross out there and it is nice to see a genuine pagri badge for comparison.
Cheers, Dave

Hi Steve,
I am pretty sure that in Heraldic Terms Torse is a striped material.
Ground is ,Ground.
I would therefore say your dragon is definitely standing on ground.

Are we sure that this is Buffs and not a Welsh regt?

Looking at this badge it is the same pattern as the Buffs dragon, as I understand the pagri badge (Gaylor plate 17A) was the dragon standing on a torse. This may have been worn by senior NCO's however and this one by OR's.

Alan,
Welsh dragons have a looped tail, English dragons are unlooped or at least that is the edict i have been using to date. The stance of the dragon is very distinct to the buffs and i would agree with the original description of the badge.
Cheers, Dave

Many thanks for the update on Welsh heraldry; I knew that the Welsh fraternity would have the answer. I have looked through all my books and photos and cannot find a similiar badge with a Buffs dragon on groound rather than a torse.

He was Royal Artillery. His regtl number prefix was allocated to the Div. He came from the Mining valleys and said the ebst thing he ever did was to volunteer in 1915 as it got him out of them for 4 years!
