Interesting pre 1796? unidentified gorget
Auction listed as British gorget. Symbolism appears correct, a lion, an anchor, over a torse. I'm thinking pre 1796 as it is much larger than the 1796 pattern.
So help please. An identification would be great or a suggestion of where I might look or an educated guess? The photos show as received, with a 1796 pattern, initial clean up and with a ca. 1790 watercolor of a Guards officer wearing a gorget of a similar size. |

Irrelevant really I suppose, but the lion/anchor/torse design is similar to the dragon/anchor/torse on the "John Riley Family Livery Button" on Ian Kelly's site.
Any chance it's livery rather than military? https://www.kellybadges.co.uk/unifor...rm-button.html |

I think you may have suggested the appropriate answer. While I have so far in my searches been unable to find an exact match I did locate a website that could possibly be of use/interest for anyone trying to identify a particular heraldic image used in livery https://sites.google.com/site/livery...ed/home/anchor |

Could this be the family crest of the colonel of a small Volunteer regiment?
