Default Armourer branch - Gunnery Armourers

In 1890 Armourers received their rate badge. Armourers could either be Gunnery Armourers or Torpedo Armourers.

Gunnery Armourers were involved in maintaining all of the weapons carried on board the ship. These included guns of large calibre & their mountings, elevation & training gears, gunsights, rangefinders, etc, & including the guns of smaller calibres, & all of the small arms carried on board ship.

Gunnery Armourer rate badges have a Cannon superimpoised over crossed axe/hammer. Badges shown below are: Armourer’s Mate & Armourer’s Crew (no star) & Armourer, Petty Officer & CPO Armourer (star)

These badges were worn up to the end of the 1940's.

Default Armourer branch - Torpedo Armourers

Torpedo Armourers maintained all of the Torpedos & Torpedo firing systems on board ship. They were also involved in maintaining the Electrical systems that operated the Torpedo firing systems.

Torpedo Armourer rate badges have a Torpedo superimpoised over crossed axe/hammer.

Badges shown below are:
Torpedo Armourer (no star) & Petty Officer & Chief Torpedo Artificer (star)

During WWI a Seaman Torpedoman (ST) could qualify in Armourer duties, & if so qualified he wore a rate badge with a letter A below his ST rate badge.

In 1940 the RCN adopted a new style of Gunnery/Torpedo Armourer rate badge & this badge lasted until 1949/50.

This badge was a Cannon crossed over a Torpedo with a star above. This badge is shown below.
