Default 39th Corps Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers Glengarry badge c1860

Hi

A while back I inherited a collection of Victorian badges. This one, I think, is a shako badge of about 1860. Can anyone tell me anything about this one please?

Thank you
Martyn

Martyn,

It is a shako or even a kepi badge of a 39th RVC, but as too attribution to a County, take your pick.

Many had numbers upto 39 in the 1860's so it could be any of them, and not just Lanarkshire.

best wishes

The poor quality of the strike with excess metal around the numeral screams fake to me I am afraid.

best wishes

I found:
39th Middlesex RVC
39th Lancashire RVC
39th Staffordshire RVC
39th Lanarkshire RVC
39th Kent RVC
39th Yorkshire West Riding RVC

And when you take into account that there were RVCs that put the precedence number of their county in their badge: the number 39 was allocated to Worcestershire (21 RVCs).

A starting point for further research?

Many thanks, the Worcestershire connection is interesting. It's a pity that it's a copy. It was bought from an experienced collector/dealer in my home town of Worcester a while back.

This badge is filthy and looks like it's been blackened. Looks like it may have a little more detail? A few more better pics.
