Hello Iain,
What sort of money should I expect to have to part with for the ILH/KR title these days? Regards Frank Quote:

Hi Frank,
the last one I saw for sale in SA was for R180 which is GBP10 at the moment, the way the Rand is diving under Zoomer, you'll get it for GBP1 and a few beans just now! regards, Iain

I want one right now, not in a fortnight!
Were they not the first into Florence? |

Yes, they were first into Florence, maybe as a compensation for Rome.
Yep, the SAPO still still uses donkey carts to get from Cape Town to Jo'burg. Not sure why it takes 5 days from Jo'burg to Jo'burg tho'

Yes, that's an officer's collar. Not sure if there was a difference between pipers badges and other bandsmen but I think they were the same. Cheers, Alex |

Hello Iain,
Got one! I think I had a CJ Rhodes moment, "Now, I want it it now!" after making a quick phone call, I've picked it up and I'm very happy with it too! Enjoy your time down south and my regards to Ladysmith and both Pollux and Castor in particular, I trust they are keeping well, my compliments to them both please Iain, it's been a long time! Kind regards Frank Last edited by Frank Kelley; 22-02-14 at 04:25 PM. |

Hi Frank,
I'm back! Where did you find a ILH/KR ST so quickly? Sorry I didn't see your post before I left but here's a pic of The Seige Museum with a replica of a Long Tom, the originals being destroyed by the retreating Boers, and either Caster or Pollux; not sure which! KR collars 039.jpg kind regards, Iain Quote:

Hello Iain,
You survived then, good! It is possible to buy almost any badge here after a brief look around, would you like to see it? Caster and Pollux were the two old howitzer's pressed into use during the awful siege, they stood outside the town hall for years! Kind regards Frank Quote:

Hello Iain,
Glad you saw them and they are both okay and have not been consigned to the melting pot! Here is the ILH/KR, as mentioned, which I am pleased with. Kind regards Frank |

Hi Frank,
very nice! With the full epaulette and 6th SA Armoured Division patch nogal! You can be very pleased. What search engine do you use when hunting for badges? It must be very tempting for certain individuals that all the potential scrap metal is there at the roadside kind regards, Iain

Hello Iain,
Yes, I am pleased, I bought it from a friend of mine who just collects almost everything when it comes to South Africa, except all the modern stuff. He collects in particular, GWSA and GEA and he has what I would say is the best collection I am aware of today (bare in mind that I have not seen Peter Digby's collection) Although, the condition is rather far worse that the pic makes clear though, the fittings from both the title and rank star have actually frayed the reverse of the khaki slip on, it has been well used! I don't search the internet or use ebay and bid or buy when it comes to badges etc. I am not sure how much Caster and Pollux would be worth as scrap, a six point three inch howitzer must be quite heavy, but, they are worth far more as what they are, these particular two without price perhaps! Kind regards Frank |

Hello Iain,
Perhaps I should add, whilst I only go to 1918 with South Africa, I will make an exception with the 6th South African Armoured Division, they did well in Italy, you get the Natal Mounted Rifles wearing similar with their title made in lead during this campaign, which proved to be a very hard one. Regards again Frank |
