J.R. Gaunt Montreal?

Has the makers name plaque J.R. Gaunt Montreal been faked?

I would be interested in forum members opinions.

I wouldn't know if they had been faked but I would guess there are signs of dodgy plates?

This is the badge that I am questioning with the Gaunt, Montreal plaque.

As KLR Said, Gaunt certainly had an office in Montreal and as far as military buttons are concerned a 'J R Gaunt & Son Ltd Montreal Made in England' backmark would be perfectly OK for a First World War period button.

As Roy mentioned there has been a previous thread on why some Sheffield VDC badges carry a 'Gaunt Montreal' marking. It may well have been simply that there was a surplus of these plaques and they were just conveniently to hand when the badge was made!

Of course, none of this is any evidence that the badge in question is a genuine one, only that theoretically it could be correct.

I wouldn't know enough about the badge to tell you if its genuine or not but the plaque looks like a good Gaunt plaque (rounded edges rather than square edges).

Having said that, it has been known for genuine plaques to be put on copied badges (I'm sure there's a thread here someone about this).

Looking at the rear of the badge, it looks like the Suffolk plinth has been added later and there is a lot of solder on the back of the badge.

I checked my Canadian badges. The J.R. Gaunt / Montreal mark is different from the one on the plate in discussion. The G is directly over the T in this example. (And in the Sheffield VDC badge.) On mine the T is halfway between the G and A and is spelled correctly. Further, the J.R.G are squeezed together, not spread apart as on these badges.
A second observation. I checked my CEF badges, and the ones that had a Gaunt plate all read J.R.GAUNT/LONDON.

Makes my Sheffield VDC Gaunt plaques even more mysterious.......

I believe that this is the general pattern VTC badge which was worn by many units, both my Suffolk VTC badges have JR Gaunt London plaques with the county scroll made as one piece badges.
