Little ribbon rosette pins - newby dumb question

Hi, excuse a newby question, but what are the little wound ribbon pins that are shown here above the medals mounted on the bar?? If I research "rosette" I get all kinds of metal additional award pins; I think these are just another way of wearing a medal ;but how do I find out what they are for?
Additionally, I have been told to leave them on the original ribbons rather than re-mounting them on new ribbons?? Is this right?

They look like at a guess rosettes for foreign miniature medals, they denote higher class of award.
They have nothing to do with wounds etc....and I note no foreign awards within the group.
So I may be wrong and they are simply someone popping them in with the medals from an old sewing box.

No idea what the rosettes are, I'd not mess with original ribbons, but that's just my view.

Additionally if he is entitled to a foreign award it would be in the London Gazette.

I have searched the foreign awards but I don't think he received any. He was in the Royal Engineers in WW1 and the RAF (based in England) in WW2 according to family history

As far as I know they are not American. We only use small stars and oak leafs to the best of my knowledge.
