Cross Belt Pouch Help Please
Hi all,
Hope everybody's recovered after the Christmas Festivities. I've just purchased a Silver Officers Cross Belt Pouch, Hall Marked 1862 with a nice brass VR cypher badge on the front of it. I have two questions I would like answered if possible please. No1: Why was the VR badge used instead of the Regimental Badge, as I believe the VR cypher was used on many different Regiment Pouches which makes it almost impossible to find out where the belt originated from. No2: Roughly what year was the Cross Belt Pouch first used. Cheers Kev. And a Happy New Year to ALL. |

Ref No1 - because it was. It would have been phenominally expensive for all regiments to do it. In general, the cavarly regiments did have their own devices. And yes, it does make it difficult if not impossible to sort them out. If you had the cross belt itself as well, that may help. Don't forget, records were not kept for the benefit of collectors. You need to do some research throught the MHS publication, museums and the like, They may be able to help. I would hazard a guess that the one you have is one of the early ones (from the HM alone and give or take 20 years or so). I don't have any QVC ones so well done in getting that one. The undress one (in leather) is shown on pictures/drawings as far back as the Waterloo period. The silver pouch is shown on a drawing from 1864 and may have been worn from around 1832 - unfortunately most pictures of that time show the front and sides of the uniforms and not the rear. Good luck. David |
