Default Hose top Garter Flashes

Dear Forum Members,
I wish to know more about these Hose top Garter Flashes (if I am not wrong to name it). What is the significance of this particular Hose top Garter Fashes, and is there a guidance as which Regiment wears what colours.
I have see many servicemen from different units based in the FARELF (SINGAPORE) wearing this. Perhaps there may be someone who has been in this area who could help me with this very interesting piece of material worn by the British Army servicemen.
Attached some pictures of the Hose top Garter Flashes (examples - not necessarily worn in the FARELF)
Appreciate all information with regards to this subject, closing off with advance THANKS and sincere REGARDS to all.

The Ghurkas certainly used the tabs to denote company within the battalion between the wars.

Default Comd 3 Cdo Bde

As worn by Brig Ian Gourlay Comd 3 Cdo Bde, FAFB(FE) Singapore 1967.
The tabs were the same green as the Commando beret.

Default Hose top Garter Flashes

Dear Grumphy, Mike Jackson and Thomas,

Thank-you very much for all the valuable information and the link given. However the significance of wearing these Garter Flashes is still not answered here.
Hope that someone will be able to give a more precise answer as to why the coloured Flashes are worn with hose tops. I would also appreciate any photos of different unit members which shows their hose tops and the colour of the flashes worn.
The one of the Brigadier Comd of 3 Cdo Bde was a good example if it was in colour. If any body remembers the SINGAPORE GUARD REGIMENT, what was the colour of their flash worn with the hose top?
Thanks to all those who have participated in this query. Infact this is a very interesting subject to discuss.
THANKS TO ALL AND CHEERS!!!
