Widely faked in w/m and in brass. The originals were in w/m I believe.

JF, Alan is right. These should be in WM - unless there is a 17L guru out there who knows different?? I also have one of these in brass and one marked 'silver' - I have crushed these and a few others - and when I drive to Calais later this month, I will be unceremoniously dropping these into the channel half way across to Dover... unless you want me to leave them in Dunkirk beside the autobahn. david |

17th LANCER NCO arm badge
17L sleeve badges were always either silver or white metal. See "Cavalry Warrant Officers' & Non-Commissioned Officers' arm badges" pages 134+ by David Linaker & Gordon Dine as available from the National Army Museum Chelsea.

Can be silver HM Last batch around 1906 BP. you can get Silver no HM mainly hollow backed again like the HM construction. After 1922 amalgamation white metal no backing plate. You will also find a solid brass/white metal type.

Kind of side tangent, but when I first, and I mean really early on, started collecting British Home Front, I was elated to find a UTP cap badge here in the states for a pretty cheap sum, so grabbed it! When I received it and was looking at it something just didn't look quite right, so I compared it to the small HG booklet I had with a small picture of several unique HG cap badges and although being slightly lighter in color it looked OK. I had even asked the seller before I bought it and he assured me it was absolutely genuine. Now I know he didn't say "genuine what"!!!! You see the reason I am sharing this here is because that badge although a definite fake by the known characteristics posted on this forum - it is also white metal!!!!.
No way to return it so I'll keep it as a fake and reminder to do better homework! Live and learn!!! Terry |

Thanks for your thoughts on this Chad, it took me a long time to find one I was happy with and this one had the added bonus of the stripes, pity the moths found it before I did.

i served in the 17th/21st our PRI was closing down and the girls gave me a couple of those Arm mottos. They were given as samples and rejected i later found out. Griff on this site couldn't believe i was showing them i knew no better back then, However i have come a long way in the last 7 years. Good luck with future collecting. Best Mac |
