Is this a good or reproduction badge?

No, not a GM ‘Black Watch’ fake but the badge worn by the 42nd Infantry Battalion (Royal Highlanders), a Montreal Regiment.

And it was also the type worn by the 73rd Bn Royal Highlanders (Canadian Expeditionary Force).
I believe there are old threads on the page about these badges. The brass version of the imperial style badge was the issue badge for the 42nd and the initial issue for the 73rd. The 73rd later had another badge featuring the numeral 73 on a maple leaf.

Thank you, would have never guessed it was a Canadian badge. Bit confusing really. Does 1916 economy black watch badge exist?

No it does not exist. The only Scottish all brass version was the Royal Scots. No others were authorised for production in all brass.

The list of ‘WW1 economy’ badges i.e. 1916 all GM issue has been public knowledge for quite some time courtesy of Julian’s (KLR) excellent research.

It is very clear cut.

If you have a GM badge not on that list it is either:
A) a genuine badge but not a 1916 all GM issue
Or
B) a fake
