Default Middlesex Regt Officers '' Hallmark ?''

Hi All,
Not sure as to what section to post this in as I'm not saying it's no good so please move as required, what I would like is any information on the IW or I.W ? hallmark, I have looked at the books I have & on-line search but the only IW I can see are dated to early for this badge any ideas ? this is the only mark on the badge any other hallmarked ones I have show the typical marks assay, crest etc. So any info would be great.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2516323961...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Thanks in advance

Gerard

Gerard,
I don't think it is a Hallmark, more likely a makers mark (and I am not aware of any list of all possible makers marks that exists - only the "common" ones. Common sense tells me if it is part of a "Silver" hallmark and its on the front of the badge, then the duty/assay marks will also be on the front.... where are they? Or has my eyesight gone to pot?

Thanks David,
Makes sense what you say,I can't see any other "standard" hallmarks I'll ask the seller if anything else on the badge but I have my doubts , as you say would normally have the hall mark on the front as with my other silver Middlesex on both ends of the scroll

Thanks again

Gerard

Default Middlesex Rgt. Badge.

Good evening.

The IW mark is not a hallmark. It is a maker's mark, or is intended to appear to be a maker's mark.

The seller in question is more than experienced enough to know that if there were a hallmark he would be well advised to advertise the fact. The fact that he is not illustrating a full hallmark tells its own story. And, I have known this seller for more years than I can remember!

So, I speak from experience!

Enjoy

Is it not the norm to have makers marks on the reverse and Hall Marks on the front ? or have I got it wrong again ??

Dave.
