Hi

What you have is an example of the 'Naval Crown'. The word 'Naval' does not mean it has anything to specifically do with the Royal Navy. It is mostly used by the Merchant Navy, although it does sometimes appear on Royal Navy badges. For instance, RN ships badges are normally topped with the Naval Crown.

However, as stated, it is more normally associated with the Merchant Navy and is often found on cap badges in place of the Royal Crown used by the Royal Navy.

It is probable that what you have is a blazer badge for someone who has served in the Merchant Navy.

I hope that makes sense! Reading it back I managed to confuse myself!

Pete

It could be an RN blazer badge, as the naval crown is usually used on the RN blazer badges.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex!

I think I'll have to disagree with you there! A Naval Crown on it's own is more likely to be Merchant Navy than RN. A naval crown forming part of a more complex design could well be RN, eg. WRNS blazer badges or badges representing an individual naval ship's badge, but I've never seen one on it's own as an RN blazer badge.

Hope you're keeping well.

Pete

Hi Pete
All good thanks, just about surviving all the madness. I have one of these which I have always thought was RN, but I have been known to be wrong
Cheers,
Alex
