Nice WW1 Welsh Hospital.

Was hidden in the lot (especially if you didn't look carefully).

Jonathan,

Yes it was but it cost me. Some of the others were either fakes or broken.

Simon.

Well one is a £400-£500 badge so you didn't too bad, bet you thought your luck was (for about 20 seconds) in when they started mid-estimate.

Simon, Not my area of collecting, but some nice looking badges. Oh, let me restate that first thought about my area of collecting - LOVE the Welsh Hospital badge.

Can you or any one advise who would have worn it, and I am guessing it was a military hospital?

Thanks,

Terry

Thanks Alan! A very interesting read. I didn't realize the badge was a Boer War one, but helps me understand why I didn't know about it.

In the link you shared there was a picture of an operating room and all I can say is that we've come a long way!!!

The chroming may not be RAC but an affection for 'walking out' as a 'best' badge. It was a practice that come to prominence at the end of the war and often worn in privately bought coloured side caps.

It might be the Boer War one or the 1915 revival at Netley.

I understood it to be the 1914 raised unit that went to Netley Hospital.

Is that correct?

Terry , here is a photo of an original Victorian operating theatre in London.

I did my surgical training in an old operating theatre in Edinburgh that had a wooden gallery that could hold 100 medical students !

Apologies for going off topic .

I think it most likely that its a WW1 badge but can't be certain. There is a Pathe news reel on the link that shows the hospital but mostly shows patients wearing no badges or their own regtl ones. There do seem to be some staff in khaki but it's not clear enough to make out what cap badge they wear.
