Default The heights of optimism: Chamar Regiment badge

Seller wants 3,500 gbp for this badge! I told him it was probably worth about 50 gbp

The seller tells me he actually got an offer for over 2,000 pounds!!

This is really crazy I think. For a brass badge that is not even well cast.
I really wish people would be a bit more sensible. I know some people like to have ultra-rare badges/medals but frankly, what's the chance of recovering your money if you ever have to sell - the number of probable buyers maybe 2 or 3 people in the whole world - and if their collecting themes change you're left with nothing!
Anyway that's my two annas worth! I'm still amazed someone made that incredible offer. I first thought the seller had made a mistake in the listing and probably meant 350 gbp.

There's always the possibility that the seller may be mistaken when he states that he was offered over £2000.

I suspect this particular seller will end up being rather disappointed!

I wrote to the seller of the first badge that another 'rare' Chamar badge has turned up on ebay and that he should sell his badge for 100 gbp if he finds a buyer. It was just well-meant advice.

To my surprise, he replied he would report me to ebay for harassment. I have told him to provide provenance for his claims about this super rare badge failing which I would report him to ebay for selling a fake. I don't plan to but I will wait for his reply...

Lot of dealers selling crap as genuine stuff has ruined the hobby..

Taking up the chance to make an offer rather pay the Buy it Now price, I put in an offer of £10. I was mortified to see that it was rejected instantly.

He has said he will report me to ebay for harrassment. I am to report him for putting up dubious stuff. Can anyone tell me the procedure?

Not sure how to report 'abuse' but I think the best take on 'rarity = value' came from a curator of the Louvre. he was asked if, in the event of a fire, he could only save one painting, which one would it be? Presumably the anticipated answer was 'the Mona Lisa'. His answer? 'The one closest to the door.'

... off topic, sorry, but does anyone have Sir John Chapple’s email or is in contact with him per chance?

I decided to have a bit of fun and posted this innocent message :
Hi there - I hope you don't mind me writing but I think you've made a typo on the buy it now price. The badge is indeed scarce but there are a couple on sale on UK dealers sites the cheapest for £135.
His response:
Hi we have been offered £1000 but refused sale there are 12 in the world.
I resisted the temptation to say that " I thought it was £2000 you'd been offered? " - Instead I thought I'd give him an out with this response: Hi there I know you're not a specialist militaria dealer so I can only assume that whoever sold you the badge in the first place gave you that story - I'm afraid that they were misinformed at best and were deliberately deceiving you at worst. The badge is on several UK Militaria sites for prices from £25 > £135. The last one sold at Bosleys went for £80 . I don't know how anyone can say "there's only 12 in the world" but that is demonstrably untrue. If someone has made a genuine offer of £1000 and then I recommend you take it.
I await his response

Got this response:

I had 2 I sold one fir £3500

The luck of the guy ! There's only 12 in the world and he had two of them ! Managing to sell one for a world record price of £3500 - which is why he can afford to be generous with the second one and only ask £1500 ! You couldn't make it up ( well apparently you can )
