I believe attached insignia were all made by the same company as the cherry type Pegasus.

I know this is commonly said by some collectors, but do you have evidence?

They certainly have the same lettering. Difficult to be affirmative. The Parachute titles were issued first in 1941 and continued to be worn at least by 1st Brigade until disbandment in 1948. The airborne strips were introduced late 1942 up until late 1944.

I’ll illustrate some of my cherry examples that I think were all done by the same maker although the bottom pair was purchased separately. The serif title seems identical to the 2nd example in Luc’s post #31, tying them all together to the common manufacturer. Some of these have previously been illustrated in the Forum.

We’ve seen lots of wonderful examples in this thread and much good info too. Thanks to all.

#2: yes indeed this is the glue-back pattern.

#3: see Oliver Lock's book on airborne insignia for reference I've heard of the Italian link before the book came out. But no ironclad provenance I'm afraid.

#4: this one has a glue-back.

#5: Personally I have no doubts that it is an original badge.

Excellent thread with great images from all contributors

Great observation Luc - I could not let an image of PARACHUTE / 3 appear (in post 31) without offering sincere congratulations if it is in your collection

Mike

Some more pictures of the rear of cherry type Pegasus patches that I have/have had. No1 is a bit of an oddity, though I am certain the black backing is period applied.

Mike, thanks for your comment. I was fortunate to buy this badge from a fellow US collector around 10 years ago.

Great collection of cherry patches, thanks for sharing!

As written on post #28, the patches and Airborne strips could have been proposed as a private purchase full set for officers.

Assuming your photo is related to #1, I would agree that the backing is weird and not original to the patch.

Could you elaborate and show the back of this patch?

Great patches and very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Luc.
A clear difference in the embroidery of the second patch vs the other cherry examples in this thread: a different loom / maker?

A picture of the back of two Pegasus patches, identical to the one in picture #1. And one of the back of #5, a high quality and well detailed badge.

Thanks for sharing, Luc.

I'm not a big fan of patches with cotton-liked material glued at the back. I can't really imagine early WW2 patches made in UK using such technique.
As for the other patch, I agree that it doesn't look like a reproduction. I don't think it is WW2 period.

Thanks for everyone's contribution. We went through a great variety of embroidered Pegasus examples!
