Thought I'd share this little find from a few days ago: Essex boys with badges 'applied' to their Brodie helmets.

Were these badges painted on, decals, other?

They must be from up North, don't look tough enough for Basildon lads.

Does it have a date. An interesting mix of badges and weapons. TA I presume. circa 1938-39?

As to date I would suggest 1937-1939 and 1 ESSEX in Egypt. Note the Bren Gun introduced into service September 1937 and soldiers in SD jackets and KD trousers.

Or could be 2 ESSEX same period at Warley Barracks, Brentwood. Soldiers wearing SD jackets and canvas fatigue trousers.

No date, and nothing inscribed on this photo, unfortunately. Tim has also kindly responded (as can be seen) with suggested dates of 1937-1939.

I presumed that they were fatigue trousers and it was a UK barracks built in the late Victorian era with the verandas. Thinking about it they must be Regulars with the Bren.
