Among the small collection I bought this weekend was a round aluminium ID disc bearing the following:-
6130 Sgt E. BURNS 1 R.SCOTS with a "P" in the middle which I think could be for "Protestant" or maybe "Presbytarian". Do the numbers indicate Great War era? Rob |

Post 1920 it would have had his army number, from the correct "block" for the Royal Scots, plus name and religion. Is this tag completely round, or does it have a "neck" for the hole?

Leigh,
Many thanks for your informed reply, this little collection I bought had all Great War badges and included a largish piece of shell drive band and a damaged bullet amongst it. I think that many of these items were collected at the 1st Eastern General hospital in Cambridge, especially as you say that CSM E. Burns was wounded in 1915. Many thanks again Rob |

BWEF,
The tag is round with a small neck to it, it looks like E. Burns was probably a pre 1914 regular soldier. Many thanks for your input. Rob |

I believe that they were first issued in the Edwardian period, around 1906? In the 2nd Anglo-Boer War the glazed linen identity labels sewn inside the soldiers tunics had been found to be inadequate for the task.
