Rough Riders collar/cap badge
Recently obtained a genuine RR collar badge that I understand was also used at some point as a cap badge, I presume on berets when they were an AA unit? Any further info as to its use a cap badge would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello CB, in Brian L. Davis' book "British Army Uniforms and Insignia of World War Two", page 80 there is a picture of a member of the Rough Riders(one the left) wearing a collar badge on a coloured patch on a Maroon beret. As to the why this man is wearing a Rough Riders shoulder title,a Maroon beret with the Airborne patch and Airborne strip, in this picture, since they were supposed to be AA artillery, I would like an explanation.

Thanks Jo, I cant seem to find much of any reference to this badge actually being worn on headgear, but apparently it was to some extent. I dont know of the picture you are refering to, but some strange things happened to TA units and their dress during the war.

There were a number of Yeomanry sqns with the AB Div. I suspect the photo is from there. The TA Units often 'doubled up' (effectively raising a second Bn) or detached sqn or batteries from the main regt. This complicates the regtl histories and makes research difficult. I think the RRs sent a Sqn to the AB Div but I cannot remmber whether it was the 1st or 6th AB Divs.

Roughriders Cap badge
Can anyone date this badge? I presume that the 1908 full size pattern was worn until use of the collar badge with the introduction of side caps and GS caps in the early 1940s? Or were the City of London Yeo in berets in between the wars as may of the RTC converted yeomanry units were? or was it later - possibly post war?
They were wearing them in the 1950s but I have been unable to date their introduction. It is marked with the very small JRGaunt London seen on some WW2 Yeo and Cav badges so it would assist with dating the use of this stamp. Alan |

At the risk of answering my own question, I have been going through a few books and right there in K&K is the sealed date of 1949. If this is correct then the small mark was in use at least up to then. Just as interestingly the a/a q/c version was sealed in 1959 which was the date of the year before amalgamation. This collaborates the statement in another thread (time for a merge I think) that the regt wore the k/c until the end in 1960- presumably they still had old stock to use up.

Hi, this thread is very interesting.
Maybe I am being blonde but what exactly is the difference between a Yeomanry and an Imperial Yeomanry unit? I have not yet started to collect Cavalry or Yeomanry badges, I'm still stuck on foot soldiers, so I know little of their organisation or badges. Thanks Phil

City of London Imperial Yeomanry
Here's my Rough Riders Imperial Yeomanry badge.
It has the South Africa scroll at the bottom, and appears to have a bronzed surface finish ,or maybe just dark gilding metal. |
