A bit garish for a cap badge in my opinion -- what's wrong with all metal? Oh well, mine not to reason why . . .

How will it look once the beret's been dragged round the tank park for a month or two and the cloth bit is gunged up?

Then you'll find out why most members of the SDG wear cream coloured berets instead of grey ones.

I found when washed in petrol our blue berets took on a purplish shade.

I've noticed that too. Fortunately for us our dark green was quite stable but it did washout eventually, as did the silk banding which was exclusive to us. I suppose that was to set us apart from the marines originally?

The 8th had black berets, not dark blue but after amalgamation in 57 Col Sir Charles Lowther Bt (he of Lowtherforce) brought in the green band first then the green beret. Or at least that's what I've been led to believe. Certainly the dark green beret was quite a modern innovation. I think it had to happen though as there was a regulation brought in that only the RTR could wear black after a certain date.

I read through the proposed dress regs for the RL. Scarlet cap with black quarter welts ? Surely it should be blue quarter welts as both regiments wear that design of cap.

A point of mild interest you may want to jot down involves the 9/12L. Reading in several accounts that they came into being with the amalgamation of the 9th and 12th in September 1960. When I was in basic training in October of 1959 our Drill Instructor was Cpl "Bob" Etherington, a 9th Lancer. One morning as we fell in he said "All those in the 9th and 12th Lancers fall in over here". He had a handful of cap badges and told them to hand theirs over. He distributed the new 9/12L badge then said "You'll be wearing these from now on". I remember thinking "Just like that, two regiments disappeared."

Saying that though, all those that served at anytime with the RMonRE were permitted to continue wearing the militia flash on the jumper and No.2 dress. So if you see a badged RE soldier wearing a small flash (green edged in gold) he or she will have served in the militia at some point. |

sad
Well I missed the amalgamation parade of the 16th/5th and 17th/21st I was advance party in Germany on June the 25th 1993 I put a red backing behind my Motto, but my identity was firmly intact, however my 16th/5th new found brothers dipped out big time cause for some ill blood but soon got underway.
Now many of us who were 17th/21stst feel much the same as the 16th/5th did back then,You would have thought 4 regiments would have had the bigger say. Sad times I mean no disrespect to the 9th/12th we will all be brothers soon under the Royal Lancer Banner. Motto should have stayed as it is, or wear the Chad as the oldest serving Arm badge, but the powers that be have messed with everything. Rgs Mac.............17th/21st 1980...........1993 QRL 1993................2003 A Lancer till the day I die. Last edited by mac mcconnell; 15-11-14 at 10:29 AM. |

It's not funny for the men when a regiment disappears in amalgamation. The officers of course all stay enthusiastic as normal.

In the changes of '68 the Cameronians opted to disband rather than amalgamate. I think they were the only ones to do so. I always thought it rather dignified although rather extreme to show your opposition to amalgamation. It's a shame more senior officers do not have the same moral courage.
