What an amazing find! I cannot believe how lucky you are to have found such a haul! It reminds me of when I was given a tin of badges when I was a teenager, which contained about 30 CEF badges, amongst others, however, this is a different league! Please look after them!

Beautiful collection. Don't let your proctologist remove that horseshoe!
Have any of the CEF collectors on the forum spotted any badges in this collection that have not been documented or seen before? Phil Last edited by Phillip Herring; 18-03-11 at 12:22 PM. Reason: Can't spell "been" properly. |

This one I can't find in the gallery, it was marked by my great-great-uncle as 7th mounted rifles. There's a cap badge and a collar badge. |

A nice badge but I don't think your uncle was on for this one... or maybe he knew something the rest of us didn't... I think it's a Canadian Mounted Rifles Draft badge... not a 7th cap... a general list badge served as the cap ... the collar is distinctive and pretty pricey.... Billy Bishops initial outfit?

Final edit: Not 7 cmr either. I think they're from the Boer War. If anyone knows what the 7th cmr collar badge look like let me know. I think that digger site is flawed. Last edited by jjplcanada; 18-03-11 at 06:25 AM. Reason: Final edit |

Go Back to the barn..... look for your uncles reference books... a man with that type and size of collection more than likely would of had almost a library of them... these books go hand in hand with collecting badges.... if you can't find them then try and pickup the Charltons price guides to First World War Canadian Infantry Badges and his second volume First World War Canadian Corps Badges... they are out of print but still available.... you need these...

I'm planning to hit the library tomorrow to look at the Charlton's guide.
My uncle's literature on the badges is limited, but he had a lot of letters from various collectors and manufacturers. For example one of the letters was from Tiptaft saying they didn't have all the badges he wanted, but could send others. This was in the early 20's. Also I found a list of wanted badges and 7th cmr was at the top without a check mark. It might have eluded him. |

This is Canadian Militia from the end of the 1800's...... It is not the version given to the men who went to the Boer War as it is toooooo bright.....

Could be that this little lot will become the equivalent of "The White Collection" that was found in England.
I know absolutely nothing in relation to Canadian badges, but from what I've seen of yours, they're superb. They are obviously causing a a lot of excitement, a few hearts to leap and bank balances to feel threatened. Congratulations on a great find. Regards Brian |

Yeah, I have to say that, while I'm sure many folks would love to have access to this collection, I personally find it wonderful you plan on keeping it in the family.
I also find it wonderful that you're willing to share the images for the online database. Between this and the other collection being slowly sold on eBay, we should be able to fill most gaps. |

I have to ask. How many Private Messages have you received from forum members wanting to buy one or more of your badges?

You've raised an important point, that's there's more to the collection than just the badges themselves.
I still have a great deal of the paperwork involved with the actual collecting, which as you point out is important. What you've listed will likely be the framework behind my investigation of how it was accrued and so forth. There's a coin considerable collection as well, but no uniforms or trench art that I know of. More details will emerge. |
