What I would like to know is simply, was this common practice within the regiment at a particular point in time, or, is the wearing of a collar, as a cap badge, peculiar to the odd individual officer?

I doubt this is a serving officer in the Regiment. Besides the badge, the cap and tunic are odd and the subject himself looks a bit long in the tooth (or moustache).

I suggest this might be a long-serving Quartermaster or Riding Master early 1900s.

In the original post in this thread, a Commanding Officer of the regiment is claimed to be the subject of the portrait.

I would still be interested to know who this man actually was.

CB

I don't think he's an 8th Hussar, more like a member of a VTC unit, the uniform seems strange and the medal ribbons are in an unusual position. Difficult to say from the photo what these ribbons are awarded to.
