Can anyone identify this uniform for me
This is my great grandfather William Johnson, I believe he was in the Royal Artillery in the 1890's. Any thoughts on the picture; such as what the badge is on the sash and the ring on his finger etc would be appreciated, thank you

Remove the Rifles type Shoulder Belt, and the Uniform is that of a Bombardier of the Royal Regiment of Artillery (RHA), with 2 years Good Conduct, post 1881.
No idea why the shoulder belt is there. Marc |

I have a few Victorian CDV's & Cabinet photos where the soldier in the photo is wearing a uniform item which is at odds with the rest of the uniform. I suspect that some photographers kept studio "props" which were worn by the subject for effect. They certainly used various props for civilian photos and the same probably applied to "uniform" photos, to a lesser extent.
I also have a few post 1881 photos of Volunteer Bn soldiers who are still wearing old pre 1881 Rifle Volunteer crossbelts with badges but I don't think this applies here as the badge doesn't appear to be RA/RHA related. David Last edited by davidwyke; 05-05-15 at 03:08 AM. |
