Terry, I believe that the MERT patches were worn by British Forces (Army Navy & Air Force) during the Afghan period and possible they were worn in Gulf War 2 but not sure about that.

MERT was a concept that began in the Balkans with IFOR when, although the kinetic threat was low, there was a significant mine strike risk in isolated and difficult to access areas. It expanded in Iraq post-2003/4 as the kinetic threat there grew but really came into its own in Afghan after 3 PARA's Helmand deployment in 2006 and the SNAFU at Kajaki Dam - when MoD finally agreed to fit winches to the non-SF Chinooks.
Absolutely stirling bunch of men and women without whom there would have been significantly more fatalities in our recent campaigns. |
