SAS and SRR Cloth Cap Badges
Hi Guys,
I have never posted here before and my knowledge of cloth cap badges is basically nil. These two cap badges, Special Air Service and Special Reconnaissance Regiment, came with a group of modern 'new metal' badges that I acquired. The metal badges were all genuine issue items. Do collectors here think that the cloth badges shown below are genuine official modern issue or just dealer knock offs? Regards, Chris |

Chris,
Here for comparison is an SRR badge acquired in NSN marked packaging from source. Tim

A very similar SRR badge (with gap between S's) was sold on Amazon by a company that sells embroidered patches.

The SRR badge also looks like it is on a Midnight Blue backing (right for SRR rank badges but not for a beret badge)...

From the pattern description;
Silver and gold wire embroidered into dark blue cloth with the word RECONNAISSANCE in black thread. Marc

Yeah, Navy not Midnight Blue.
Compare it with genuine SAS & SBS beret badges - as with the sword there is supposed to be a degree of continuity across UKSF insignia. |

I can see a lot of similarities in the embroidery but is the backing different? Do you have a reverse view? Regards, chris |

I think mine is quite different to the Amazon one but the gap in the 'S's between mine and Amazon remains. Regards, Chris |

Mine seems to fit the bill at description level at least. Regards, Chris Last edited by hagwalther; 15-06-19 at 08:48 AM. |

It really is a horror but was the only photo I could find with the space between letters.

Chris,
More photos of the NSN packaged version which I have no doubt is official issue. Backing is a dark royal blue shade rather than navy or black. The scroll is outlined in royal blue. Tim

My backing looks like the same type of material but would have to say it was black. The badges look very similar though - balance of probability good? Regards, Chris |

Hi Guys,
I have some images ex-stores SAS and SRR that have been sent to me. I will ask if I can use the images here but they both seem to reconcile with the images with the badges that I posted at the start of this thread. At the moment, I would say that both of my badges are modern and genuine. Bit of a strong call I know but people who know me from A/A and 'New Metal' badges will know that I always edge to caution so fingers crossed! Regards, Chris |
