Default Dieppe patchs

Hi everybody,

My name's Frederick
I'm working for a big publisher in Normandy.
We are four friends who are writing a very big book about Dieppe Raid Many collectors (including us) gathered a lot of stuff:
14 helmets which were worn by Canadian soldiers during the raid, cap badges, uniforms, patchs etc

We are looking for more stuff: patchs of 1942
-Calgary Regiment
-Royal Regiment of Canada
-Royal Hamilton LI
-Essex Scottish
-Black Watch
-Calgary Highs
-Mont Royal
-Queen's Own Cameron Highs of Canada
-South Saskatchewan
-14th Hussars (8th Recce)
-Toronto Scottish

The book will contain 368 pages in color with more than 600 pictures (340 are never been seen, they come from private collections, Canadian veterans, German veterans, families etc...
So if you want to help us, you are welcome.
We'll give a free copy to everyone who would help us.

Best Regards

Fred

Hello Frederick, Welcome to the Forum.
Could you be a little more descriptive about the things you are looking for? Is it the geometric formation patch?
And why the 14th Canadian Hussars? They did not participate in the raid.

Hi,
Yes the geometric formation patchs and Officer cap badges.
Few soldiers of the 14th Hussars, 8th Recce fought during the raid.
One officer of this unit has been killed in action that day.
Thank you very much
Fred

Yes, there were 5 officers and 4 OR's on the raid. Two were severely wounded but none killed. I would have to look it up but I think they were referred as "special observers". Cheers Brian

As 9 special observers, it is hard to make the case that the "unit" participated in the Dieppe Raid. It would be interesting to know how they participated. I checked some other references, and found no mention of Vokes, or the VIII Recce. But, the wiki reference to Chris Vokes indicates that Frederick Vokes took a leading part in the assault. Odd. Then the wiki reference for the VIII Recce says the unit did not participate in Dieppe, and Dieppe is not listed as a battle honour. (Yes, I know wiki is not a reliable reference, but the books I have are other unit histories or more general histories. The only specific book on Dieppe that I consulted, Whitaker's Dieppe does not mention Vokes.)
You learn something every day. Including the VIII Recce insignia is certainly your choice, but an appropriate explanation should accompany the inclusion.

Default Recce Battle honours

Bill, with only 9 participants as 'observers', the VIII Reece would not qualify to apply for Dieppe as one of their battle honours. IIRC, armour needs more than 50% of a Sqn, and it needs to be a credible part in the outcome of the action.

Hi Bill, Yes I know the rules regarding the award of battle honours. In part, that was my curiousity with the inclusion of the VIII recce in the book. There are lots of other situations where similar circumstances exist, but I would not want to say the unit was invovled. For example, a lot of Canadian officers and NCO's were sent to North Africa in 1942 -43 to gain "battle experience", but I don't think that would make their unit a representative at the particular actions.

Hello Frederick,

I may be able to help you out with some images. The Dieppe Raid is at the centre of my collecting interests, and I have few items that may be of interest to you.

Cheers,
James

Thanks Brian. Unfortunately it really doesn't tell much about their actual role.

Default Dieppe Raid

As a Brit I have to ask:
Are the actions by 3 Cdo, 4 Cdo and 40 (RM) Cdo going to get a mention in the book?
And the US Rangers who also participated as "Observers"?
Mike

Hi,
We'd need all the items you could have acces to.
Very good news about The Calgary Regiment.
Do you have pictures of the B, C and HQ Squads in the museum?
I got one portrait of Lt-Col Andrews in Service Dress but we are looking for more, if it's possible.
All the photos will be credited to the "King's Own Calgary Regiment Museum" if you want to.

Canuck 13, here is my adress:

fjeanne.heimdal@gmail.com

Thank you very much for your help.

Our book will be appriciated by a lot of collectors!

Frederick
