Is there a difference between the first gun badges issued in 1902 to those of the common KC badges?

3DG,
if you mean the standard RA Cap Badge, then the only difference with the early/first badges was they had lug fittings. The slider being first introduced in 1903.

Did the 2nd patterns have a long slider or did they just slip straight over to a standard length slider?

The first RA gun badges came with lugs E/W on the back of the 'Ubique' scroll, badges with lugs somewhere else tend to be mostly Canadian RA badges. They are rare, but not always expensive, as quite a few sellers aren't aware (or not interested) in the significance of those lugs.

That was certainly the case with very many early "gun" badges, as here, with the Transvaal Horse Artillery Volunteers.
