Medals, badges and ephemera relating to my Grandfather who enlisted in 1906. A Londoner from the Euston Road / St Pancras area and born in 1888 I do not know why he was in a Welsh Regiment but he served with 1 SWB in Hyderabad, Quetta, Chatham and Bordon prior to WW1. Landed in France 13 August 1914 when 1 SWB were in 3 Infantry Brigade of the 1st Division of the BEF. He was wounded in November 1914 and again in December 1917 and spent the latter part of the war with 3 SWB training recruits at Sniggery Woods Camp, Hightown near Liverpool.

Picture of an SWB soldier taken in full dress with sphinx collar badges. Taken in Chatham 1914.

A lovely portrait, before the civilised world went mad, although, if it was taken at Chatham I'd be rather surprised if it had been taken in 1914?

Here is what I know so far: The photo was in my Grandfathers effects and is by USA Studios which show addresses on the back including 90 High Street, Chatham. The photo is stamped 'Branch Chatham'. Of course the photograph could have been taken at any time between 1910 and 1913 when 1 SWB were stationed at Lower Barracks Chatham from 23 December 1910 to 24 August 1913. They then moved to Bordon until mobilised with the BEF to France on 13 August 1914. The photo is not my Grandfather and although I do not know the soldier's name, it is however, possible that he was his 'best mate' or the 'Best Man' at my Grandfather's wedding in Chatham in 1914. Well, that is exactly why I would have been surprised, because as you say the 1st battalion had left for Bordon and the 2nd was on Foreign Service, but, a wedding in Chatham in 1914 is perfectly possible.
It remains a superb portrait. Quote:

Tim, I forgot to ask did your great grand father make it through to the 31st of October 1914 and the grounds of Gheluvelt Chateau and beyond?
I think the 2nd Worcestershire famously linked up with the battalion after pressing home their attack that day. Watching 1917 on Monday last was a sobering reminder of the war and the awful price, particularly, after the end scene and the dedication to Alfred Mendes and "the stories" he told. Just read post thirty one, so forget my question, glad he came through. Last edited by Frank Kelley; 19-01-20 at 09:51 AM. |
