The issue of the issue khaki uniform would have been after the VTC organisation ended and the establishemnt of the volunteer battalions.

Pedantry perhaps, but as such he may be an ex-VTC soldier but not VTC when the picture was taken. If he was VTC then I would more likely expect him in the VTC style uniform, whether that be green or later dyed khaki with VTC insignia. There was huge variations in VTC dress but there is not one item of clothing or insignia that is unique to a VTC soldier. On that balance of probability I would suggest that unless there is any evidence to the contrary he is a TF soldier with a broken cap badge.

If this was a photo taken on the transition between the VTC and the volunteer bn it is far more probable that he would have been wearing the issue khaki uniform but retaining his old VTC badge.

Default Leeds Rifles

Hi All
Am having a conversation with a group on facebook at the moment on the legitimacy of this badge (not mine). Did it exist and is this one real or not ?
I have found some snippets here and there but nothing definite.
Richard

Hello Richard, have a look at the last image on this page, showing a comparison between genuine and fake Gaunt marks.

Cheers Tony.

The badge existed and the unit had a complicated lineage with a Bn merger in WW1, a single 7/8th post war, a splitting off again in the late 30's, and re-roling :

- The 7th/8th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion, the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) (TA) existed from 1922 to 1936.

- It was split out in 1936 into the 7th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion, The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) (TA) and the 66th (Leeds Rifles, the West Yorkshire Regiment) Anti-Aircraft Brigade, Royal Artillery (TA).

- The 7th converted to RTR in 1939 as 'doubled up' as the 45th and 51st Leeds Rifles RTRs.

- The 66th are believed to have worn the RA badge until the regt's disbandment in Jan 1945.

That badge is a copy. The die is a known repro one and the mark is a fake one which imitates the Gaunt mark.
